I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and reading recently about how technology affects our emotional and spiritual lives. Once I’ve formulated my thoughts, I’m sure I’ll write something about it here.
In the meantime, I discovered a load of old poetry when I was sorting through some folders on my computer. This is a poem that I wrote when I was 17 in 1994, before most people had the internet and long before social media and smartphones. It’s interesting to re-discover it and realise that I seem to have come full circle again and realised the power and importance of turning technology off.
Legal Drug
Swizz in a
Fancy box.
Ninety-nine pounds,
Ninety-nine.
You told me I was
Buying shares in the
World’s future.
You didn’t tell me I was
Selling my own.
For years I believed
Your binary logic,
Off or on,
No in between.
Then came the
Power Cut.
Inconvenience.
And suddenly,
In the dark,
I was able to see again.
Next time you try
To rule me
I know I will succeed over you,
Because I have the
Power to turn you off.
